"The story of this wine cannot be told without mentioning Luisa Ponzi, under whom I interned in 2012. Working my first vintage it was difficult for my newbie eyes to easily tell the difference between some of the pinot Gris coming in the door and some the pinot Noir coming in the door. Of course I asked Luisa why people didn’t make a red wine out of pinot Gris. She responded in a gruff manner that made it quite clear what she thought of that idea. Obviously I took that as a challenge. In 2016 I made my first skin contact Pinot Gris - in her winery. Hilarity ensued and my first Pinot Gris was in the books.
One cannot talk about Weber Vineyard without mentioning its farmer, Andy Humphrey. He' has been working that land for over 40 years. There are few people I have met in the valley that are more connected to their vineyard than he - on many days it looks as though he himself sprouted from that red, volcanic soil.
THe growing season of 2021 was flawless…except for two heat spikes - one of which saw the willamette Valley see a temperature of 116º! In Oregon! Lukily, Old, established vineyards like Weber were able to withstand the extreme heat and, as usual, the produced beautiful, healthy fruit."
